Opportunity Information: Apply for W81XWH 22 PCRP EIRA
The FY22 DoD Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Early Investigator Research Award is designed to help postdoctoral researchers in the first phase of their careers launch a focused, mentored research program in prostate cancer. The goal is not only to produce strong science, but also to build the next generation of independent prostate cancer investigators. The postdoctoral researcher serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) and is expected to take primary responsibility for writing the application and shaping the project, while still receiving active guidance from one or more mentors. Importantly, the PI does not need prior prostate cancer research experience, but must show clear promise and commitment to a future career at the leading edge of prostate cancer research. Eligibility is tied to career stage: the PI must have three years or less of postdoctoral research experience (not counting clinical residency or clinical fellowship training) as of March 31, 2023. The program also strongly encourages applications from investigators who are committed to prostate cancer health disparities and equity-focused research.
A central requirement of this award is mentorship. Each application must include at least one mentor with demonstrated experience in prostate cancer research and in training investigators, supported by evidence such as active research funding, recent publications, and a record of successful mentorship. If the primary mentor is relatively junior faculty, the PI is encouraged to add a secondary mentor with a stronger track record in prostate cancer research and mentoring. For projects focused on health disparities, at least one mentor should bring direct expertise in prostate cancer health disparity research. Beyond credentials, mentors are expected to show a concrete commitment to helping the PI build skills and move toward independence, not simply to provide laboratory space or occasional advice.
On the scientific side, proposed projects must address one or more of the FY22 PCRP Overarching Challenges, with special encouragement for studies that advance health equity and reduce disparities in prostate cancer. The application needs a strong scientific rationale and a well-developed methodology that shows the PI has thought deeply about the problem, the approach, and the path to meaningful results. Feasibility matters: applicants should clearly define the research design, explain how aims will be achieved, and identify the resources required. Preliminary data can strengthen an application but is not required; if included, it should come from the PI, mentor(s), or collaborators. The award permits research involving human subjects and human anatomical substances, but it does not allow clinical trials, meaning studies cannot prospectively assign human participants to interventions to evaluate health outcomes.
A major emphasis of the mechanism is investigator growth, which is formalized through a required researcher development plan. The PI must lay out an individualized plan focused on building prostate cancer-relevant expertise, including the skills and training needed to complete the proposed work and to transition toward an independent research career. Applicants must also describe the mentoring and research environment, and if the home institution lacks certain resources, the program allows those gaps to be addressed through collaborations with other institutions. If the project relies on substantial external resources, the PI is encouraged to name a co-mentor at the collaborating site to ensure hands-on guidance and dependable access. The program pushes for high-quality, reproducible science practices where appropriate, including cell line authentication, statistical rigor in animal studies, and experiments that strengthen clinical relevance and translational potential. It also encourages sophisticated analyses of large patient datasets and repositories (for example, long-term health records and biospecimen resources) using modern genomics/proteomics, bioinformatics, and mathematical modeling. Applicants are strongly encouraged to include letters of support documenting access to critical resources needed for the work.
Administratively, awards are issued as assistance agreements, meaning funding is provided to support a public purpose rather than to directly procure services for the government. The agreement may be a standard grant or a cooperative agreement depending on how much involvement the Department of Defense anticipates during the project. If no substantial DoD involvement is expected, the award is typically a grant; if substantial involvement is expected, it becomes a cooperative agreement and the nature of that involvement is specified during negotiation. The opportunity also aligns with broader federal priorities, including recommendations from the congressionally mandated Metastatic Cancer Task Force, and applicants are encouraged to propose ideas consistent with those recommendations if they fit within the program’s rules and priorities.
The work must be relevant to active-duty Service Members, Veterans, military beneficiaries, and/or the broader American public, and collaborations between military/Veteran institutions and non-military organizations are strongly encouraged to leverage unique populations, data resources, and infrastructure. The anticipated budget is up to $300,000 in direct costs for the entire period of performance. The DoD expected to allocate about $10.08 million total to support roughly 21 awards under this announcement, with funding dependent on federal availability and the scientific and programmatic strength of submitted applications. Awards were expected to be made by September 30, 2023, and FY22 funds associated with these awards were anticipated to remain available for use through September 30, 2028.
Finally, applicants planning studies involving humans or animals should account for additional DoD regulatory layers beyond local approvals. Human subjects or human anatomical substances research must undergo review by the USAMRDC Office of Research Protections, Human Research Protection Office (HRPO), in addition to local IRB or ethics review; local IRB approval is not required at submission, but HRPO approval is required before research begins, and applicants are advised to plan for a review timeline that can take up to about three months once complete documentation is submitted. Multi-institution human studies require a plan for a single IRB arrangement. Animal studies similarly require review by the Animal Care and Use Review Office (ACURO) in addition to the local IACUC, and applicants should plan for an approval process that can take roughly three to four months. Across study types, the program emphasizes rigorous design and transparent reporting practices to improve reproducibility and translational value, including principles reflected in widely used standards and guidelines for preclinical rigor.Apply for W81XWH 22 PCRP EIRA
